Groton restaurants affected by rising COVID-19 count – NBC Connecticut



Paul’s Pasta Shop in Groton takes a step back as the number of COVID cases rises in the state and region. The restaurant will not be offering indoor dining at this time.

“Which is the hardest thing to do because it’s our bread and butter season,” said Paul Fidrych, owner of Paul’s Pasta Shop. “This is when you earn the money to get through the winter.”

Fidrych said his employees are grappling with a small outbreak of Covid-19, which is creating a staffing problem. That, added to the spike in statewide cases, prompted Fidrych to make the decision.

“We always let people in to buy things. They can still enter the building to buy pasta, gift certificates, and take out. I hope this will ensure the safety of people in general, ”Fidrych said.

Paul’s Pasta Shop will re-evaluate after Christmas. They hope to offer indoor meals again in about two weeks, depending on the situation.

Another restaurant in the area, Groton Pizza Palace, is also struggling with coronavirus issues.

Groton Pizza Palace is closed this week as 75% of staff are sidelined by COVID or contact tracing.

Owner Jim Lampos said when two employees tested positive for the virus he had all of his staff tested. Several other people have tested positive for the virus, despite being vaccinated and wearing masks at work, Lampos said.

“It’s a pretty big success, but there’s not much we can do about it,” Lampos said. “Better to err on the side of caution, I think.”

In addition to restaurants, the Ledge Light Health District reports that COVID cases in the New London area are being traced to schools and daycares.

“We are seeing daycares closing for a while as learning is disrupted for children,” said Kris Magnussen, public health nurse for the Ledge Light Health District. “People’s livelihoods are at stake when this happens. “

LLHD once again urges people to get vaccinated and boosted, if they are eligible. They also stress the importance of masking.

Doctors at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital have the same message. Their number of COVID patients has not been so high since the start of the year.

“Most patients don’t get vaccinated or they need to get their boosters, so one of the big things we’re trying to do is have the boosters make a difference,” said Dr Oliver Mayorga.

Lampos said that at Pizza Palace he was the only one in his team to have received a recall so far. He tested negative for the virus.

“I would definitely encourage people to get the recall,” Lampos said.
